I find it ok. The multiple controllers aren't obvious, but you get used to it
pretty quickly (or I did).
You can change directories with it. The instruction manual shows how. You have
to click one of the buttons in (briefly) to go into file-browsing mode. From
there, you can do 4 things: left/right go up and down in the current
directory. A brief click descends into a (selected) directory, or selects a
file to start playing. A long click goes up one directory.
