Funny, other farily good WAV utils here listed it as non PCM... perhaps they 
meant non-*linear* PCM.

Yes, and it doesn't even check the header on the WAV; it will compress /dev/
random if you tell it to.  The problem is not the input file... I don't know
what yet, so that's interesting :-)
