Yes, this is correct, I definitely recommend AGCing the two parties 
separately. Otherwise, if you tried to AGC the two parties mixed into a 
single channel, the AGC would have to keep readjusting between two very 
different levels/environments all the time, which would give much worse 
results. With separate channels, each AGC only has to home on to the 
level on that channel just once, at the beginning, and then just follow 
that with small adjustments.
