[paranoia] cdparanoia stops predictably on certain disks

When ripping certain CDs, for now only any of three that came in the same set,
but always at the same spot, cdparanoia stops and CPU activity goes to 0 and
does not recover.  No messages appear in the logs until after I kill it, which
takes a while to happen, when I get

ide-cd: cmd 0xbe timed out
hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
hdc: irq timeout: error=0x00
hdc: ATAPI reset complete

in the kernel log.  The CD plays fine normally and does not appear scratched;
certainly, cdparanoia does not detect anything wrong, but simply pauses and
seems to wait for something.
