[paranoia] major hurdle - total lockup

Marc,
Try turning off (or reducing) the DMA mode to that
ATAPI cdrom using one of these commands:
hdparm -d0 -c1 /dev/hdd
hdparm -d 1 -X 34 /dev/hdd
This assumes that your cdrom is connected to /dev/hdd .
