[paranoia] dvd drives & ripping quality

hi there!

are there differences in the audio ripping capability of dvd rom drives?
i'd like to have a recommendation which brand to buy (atapi ones).  toshiba cd
roms seem to have a good reputation but i'm not sure that carries over
to the dvd roms...

i'm not concerned about speed, only about good error correction since i
have some very scratched cd's!
