[paranoia] cdparanoia can't make a smooth recording

You really should replace it. Newer drives are much better, and you will
pay
less than you did for the old drive. With a good drive you will get a full
cd with very few, if any, errors. 

SCSI is better than ATAPI, but worth the money in my opinion.
