yes, it is substantial. but afaik not much optimization work has gone 
into theora yet, so there's hope.

i heard some guys on irc mention theora-mmx, which makes use of the 
pentium's simd instructions. it's somewhere in svn.xiph.org. haven't 
tried it myself yet, but it might reduce the load somewhat.
