I guess the point of calling something 1.0 is that it fixes the
format. So, is it safe to say that all files made with a 1.0 encoder
or greater will play on a 1.0 decoder?
I don't think it matters if not all features are supported for
backwards compatibility, as long as the future files will actually
*play* on that 1.0 decoder. That's not the case at the moment with
things like word processors, where (once widely used) document
formats from the mid-90's (eg Word Perfect, Pagemaker) can't even be
opened on many of today's computers.
