I'm starting to reply to myself, so I guess this'll be the last I have
to say about this topic. :)
I have downloaded Helix Producer Basic because I was curious how Real
Audio and Vorbis compare at 32kbps. (Actually, all my test clips in
Vorbis came in a bit under 30kbps). In comparing the two, it basically
comes down to which one you hate less. Real is muffled and warbly,
Vorbis is bright and tinny. I prefer tinny over warbly, but the choice
is kind of like deciding if you prefer being kicked in the groin or
being kicked in the face.
So, in summary, quality-wise I think Vorbis is already on par with Real,
and it can only get better with Vorbis 1.1. Speed-wise, Real wins hands
down by an overwhelming margin, and I don't know if Monty's plans
include any possibilities for speed-up. Considering that current VBR at
-q -1 is a bit over twice as slow as Real's 32kbps mode, I find it
unlikely that Vorbis 1.1 will beat Real's speed. However, since
processor power is steadily getting cheaper, I'm willing to believe that
many people would trade speed for quality.
