Well they are metadata, insofar as they are data about another stream of 
data, and they are pretty generic...

But they're not some sort of all encompassing, ridgedly formal data model of 
everything that can go into a set of liner notes. Which is fine, because I 
don't need one of those, and wasn't advocating it.

The 'Windows registry' model of metadata storage. Great fun until you want to 
move the tags along with the file to somewhere else, like to your work box, 
your car, your portable, or off the website you sell your music from to your 
customer's machines. 

And don't even talk to me about Musicbrainz until they get themselves tag 
clients for Mac and unix, and bindings for a dozen languages. 

Sure, cache the metadata centrally. But the data no more 'belongs' there than 
in the vorbiscomment header.

I don't. That was my point. I like the tags just fine the way they are.
