I'm interested to see how many MIPS Xiph themselves can fit Vorbis into.
It would make for some interesting comparisons to other codecs. At the
moment if you stick MP3, WMA and Vorbis codecs on a portable, MP3
playback will last about 50% longer on battery than the other two. I'm
guessing that 30 MIPS is the difference between "it works" and "it
doesn't suck battery".
Oh yeah, and DSP compilers really, really suck. At least, the one I'm
currently cursed with using does. Even the assembler is a buggy slow
piece of crap. It's amazing just how much code the C compiler can churn
out for the simplest things. You end up writing almost the majority of
code in assembly just to make the damn thing fit in memory. It makes me
appreciate just how polished gcc actually is.
