 From my perspecive, a hardware player will either
(a) not have enough screen real-estate to display any but the most basic 
tags anyway, or
(b) have lots of screen real-estate. Plenty of space for a proper 
tag-display-format editor.

 From yet another perspective, what's wrong with:

ARTIST=One Bad Pig
ARTIST=(guest) Johnny Cash

?
