Also, the Winamp team developed a Vorbis encoder plugin for the cd ripper
portion of Winamp, but unfortunately due to Vorbis' uncertain legal status,
AOL had it removed from the package. Xiph can claim all they want that it's
patent free, but that just aint good enough enough for a major company who
could end up being a target for a major patent infringement lawsuit.. They
need something with a bit more legal certainty.
It's presumed that AOL's lawyers are checking into how safe it'd be to
distribute it, but there is no word on their progess or whether they gave up
entirely.
However, you can download it seperately from:
http://www.public.asu.edu/~abarber2/Stuff.html
Or get it from an older 'officially unreleased' version 2.9x maybe an early
v5 alpha.
Also, W5 includes an updated in_vorbis.dll plugin that fixes several bugs
that were in the older one distributed with v2.91
