I'm thinking about starting a rip project for my collection as well.
Because of the uncertainty inherent in ripping to a lossy format,
I'm going to rip using FLAC for 'archival' purposes. That way it's
possible to re-encode to whichever lossy codec is best down the
track. If I start to have disk space problems then maybe it'll be
worth tossing some FLAC streams, but I think that's something to
worry about when the time comes.
