Seems like it, yes. A debug build works fine.
Btw, output between the two differs quite a bit. The non-optimized is
(for this particular test file) 98.9 kbps, the optimized is 83.7 (both
encoded with -b 80)... Is that really to be expected?

OK, I think I've found something now. By changing from multithreaded to
singlethreaded runtime libraries, the problem is gone (output is still
different from the debug build though...).
Note that I'm using my own workspace for this, but I can make the
problem appear and disappear by just changing the runtime libraries,
and, AFAICT, the release is created using multithreaded libraries (I
looked at the .dsp-files in the vorbis\win32 folder).
