I would put a notice at the head of the licence file reading "If you
derive a version noticably affecting encoder output, please consider
changing the vendor string (see lib/info.c (IIRC)) to indicate that".

Or something like that...  The assumption is that anybody half-way decent
will take a look at the license file before widely distributing a direved
program and that he will have good enough informal judgement to decide
this (we don't want all non-official modifications legally forced to
change the string as then we will end with too many different strings).

Best way to lose ~6GB music and other personal files: create a roaming
profile on another computer pointing to your My Documents instead of your
profile dir; logon - it won't find your settings; so logout - it will be
"saving your settings" very long time because it is busy deleting all
unrecognized things in your directory.  [Personally experienced on win2k].
