We were using an old 5 band AM processor. Which as you can imagine is
hideous for a compressed webstream because of all the AM things it does
like clipping bass and the like.
We now have a simple three band processor with compressor and AGC
connected at the moment. I'd be really interested to know a bit more
detail as to why multiband compression is so evil to the vorbis process.
I don't know much about the inner workings of the Vorbis codec, but is it
something to do with the process being modelled toward more `natural'
proportions of different frequencies present in the sound? Could this be
something associated with the fact that over webstream, pure speech with
no background music begins to sound squelchy, even at high bitrates?
