You should download two things from Apple's web site: The free Mac OS 
8.6 update, and CarbonLib 1.6.  Both of these are available from 
Apple's software update web site 
<http://www.info.apple.com/support/downloads.html>.

Most new software is written to Carbon so it will run on both the 
classic Mac OS and Mac OS X (if it's not written purely for Mac OS 
X).  The minimum system for running most Carbon software is Mac OS 
8.6 and the latest version of CarbonLib, which requires at least Mac 
OS 8.6.  A more realistic system is Mac OS 9 or later.
