I see. I assume this is because the original mono analog tape is
transcribed to a two-channel analog tape, which is then digitized.
Nasty. I had never really thought about this, implicitly assuming that
one would generate a two-channel CD from a mono tape by digitizing the
mono tape and then duplicating the digital signal, resulting in two
absolutely identical channels.

It would be nice if oggenc had a --mono switch that would cause it to
simply throw away the right channel and generate a mono vorbis file
using the left channel only. Or by adding the two CD channels together,
if that might be preferable for some arcane digital-audio reason.
