Not specifically to allow _this_.

We switched to allow more widespread commercial adoption.

We _always_ wanted independent implementations.  Making proprietary
modes is not perfectly fine, although you're likely to get frowned upon
by the users.

Not to mention that a lot more people will be looking at the mode
descriptions that ARE open, and thus, those are likely to sound much
better.
