1. Support The Ogg Project

The Xiph.org Foundation is the not-for-profit company that funds and
manages the Ogg, Icecast, and other related projects. We are now
accepting donations via [14]PayPal. Please consider contributing to
our efforts by sending a donation to <[15]donate at xiph.org> via PayPal.

2. Status Updates

The Ogg team finishing up RC3. Here is a quick update from some of the
most active developers in the last few weeks.

2.1. Monty

Monty has been hacking virtually non-stop, and has finally merged his
work onto mainline in preparation for the RC3 release. CVS is still
limited to 128kbps, but over the next few days, the rest of the modes
   should make an appearance.

2.2. Stan Seibert

Stan has been hard at work finishing his massive changes to ogg123.
The buffering and streaming code is quite reworked and everyone is
encouraged to test this work (on the volsung_kc_20011011 branch of
vorbis-tools). He hopes to merge soon so that this new code ships with
   the RC3 release.

2.3. Jack Moffitt

Jack has been improving the alsa09 plugin for libao and preparing for
an alpha release of Icecast 2. He has also been having fun playing Ogg
   CDs on his Dreamcast.

2.4. Michael Smith

Michael is currently touring America, visiting (among other friends)
some of the other developers at Xiph.

3. New Developments

Lots of code getting written. Release preparations are under way for
   the long-awaited RC3.

3.1. Metadata Flamefest

Jonathan Walther [16]rekinkled the metadata flames with his revised
proposal. It makes for some entertaining reading. A revised proposal
was [17]also offered, and Segher tried [18]classifying metadata so
that everyone could better understand the problems.

3.2. Update for Sonic Foundry's Siren

An update from Siren was (unofficially) [19]made available to bring
Ogg support up to the RC2 level.

4. Interesting Happenings

A lot of mail comes in to the various lists as well as to the team's
personal mailboxes. The following is a highlight of the interesting
things that have been mentioned or announced.

4.1. Ogg In Games

Brian Hook (of id software fame) and his new company [20]just released
their first game, [21]Candy Cruncher, which uses Ogg for sound.

Also, Papyrus Racing Games are using Ogg in their current racing
title, NASCAR Racing 2002. They had this to say about their decision
   and experience:

<p> "We're using a lot of spoken audio in this title (a first for us) and
your codec has allowed us to reduce more than 350MB of audio data to
about 40MB, a huge savings of memory and disk space! We are very
   impressed."

   --Tom Faiano, Producer

<p> "Incorprating Ogg Vorbis into our codebase was quite painless, and in
the end, even refreshing. No fuss no muss. Thank you for your
   efforts!"

   --Bill Farquhar, Soundguy du jour

4.2. Downslam Supports Ogg

Downslam, an open-source music label has [22]added support for our
   favorite format.
