It doesn't matter. Why? Think about it like this:

I want to record more precise information about tracks; in particular I want
to break titles and artist tags down into more precise components so I can
group tracks by composer or conductor, or who remixed it.

The nice thing about vorbiscomment is that I can go ahead and do this right
now (and I'm doing just that with a PRODUCER tag), but if I want to see those
tags displayed in players, used properly in tag editors, be made accessable
as search fields and I want to exchange files with other people, then it
starts to matter that we share a standard.

In practice, however, we don't really have to agree on very much to make that
happen:

  - Tag editors need to be able to supply the user with some help describing
what should and shouldn't go in a given field. On the logic side, they
could contrain a field that's supposed to be numeric not to use arbitary
text. They don't need to know much more to handle vorbiscomments, and
should allow editing of arbitary field names anyway.

  - Players should know that a particular tag is a title or artist component,
so they can display a sensible title or artist from the components. They
need to have sensible defaults about which order to put components in,
and what to do if some are missing. Ideally, they should let the user create
their own display formular from arbitary field types.

  - Search, sort and limiting facilities should work on arbitary fields, but
would work better if the knew that a particular field is of a particular
broad type - text, dates, numbers.

Implementation-wise, we don't need to know much more. It certainly isn't
going to be important to the software as to whether Aphex Twin should be
considered an ensemble, a soloist , or a performer. So long as it can display
the right thing, even if I use 'artist' or any of the above, I'm happy. If I
can edit the tag and swich to a 'better' field, then I'm happy. If I can
seach for 'Aphex Twin' in a list of all of the above fields, I'll get what I
want.
