problems with MiniDisc:

 - I can buy three portable CD players + car adapter kits for the price of a single Minidisc player. (caveat - cheap cd players!) I have yet to find an _inexpensive_ MiniDisc player.

Sound quality is inferior to CD.
 - lossy compression - Atrac format - generation losses

Minidisc hasn't caught due to the pricing issue. There isn't enough market share to supplant CD's.
