[vorbis] XMMS plugin cannot play b3 encoded files

Me neither.

I can play beta2 streams with beta3 as well, but not the other way around.

No, it's with my manual builds as well. If I try to play back a beta3 stream
with the beta2 decoder, it clips almost every sample. It doesn't say it
is an
invalid stream or something. I will investigate a bit...
