As much as i personally like the unified .ogg extension for its sheer
simplicity, in the short term there may have to be a compromise.
does windows deal with 5 letter extensions? i know it likes 4 ok.
so, what about this?
.ogg = ogg vorbis. generic extension.
.vogg = ogg vorbis video only
.mogg or .aogg = ogg vorbis audio only
.vmogg or .vaogg or .avogg or .mvogg = ogg vorbis combined video and audio.
of course, ideally windows would handle '.'s in an extension (hah! but
wouldnt that be difficult to parse...) and we could do
.ogg, .m.ogg, .v.ogg and that would be cool.
of course, more interesting would be to write the plugins for windows such
that the following in performed (of course, i dont like the idea of
enforcing these sorts of standards on programmers, being one myself, but
its just a thought)
registry entries are created to register ogg vorbis viewers and thier
capabilities, seperate of windows extension/association registry
entries. then, when the default .ogg plugin runs and detects that it
cannot handle a particular type of stream, it checks this entry and
loads up a program that can.
thoughts?
have fun
