Or you could just publish your work, and use that as prior art should someone
try and patent it. Then you have none of the worries of the patent being
used to strongarm anyone (individuals or corporations).

"Open source patents" are stupid. If you publish without copyright, someone
else can still copyright it, so you need free licenses there. But if you
publish without patent, no one else can patent it.
