Thanks Erik! Your analysis pinpoints gcc-4.1 and 4.3 generating
incorrect code for the max()/MAX()/vorbis_max() macros in
single-precision floats. Compiling without -ffast-math, "make check"
succeeds and the encoder_example produces a file with the correct
length and content.
