it is used, and the old macros are around as a fall-back.

The problem is that if the old macro is not found, it cannot be
expanded, and then there are syntax errors in the resulting configure
file (even if that path is not used). So ./configure bombs out, just
after finding Ogg (via pkg-config), with a shell syntax error.
