who's idea ?

i've been told by more informed people than me that there are some
patent-free
and better algorithms than the classical IBM implementation. Furthermore,
arithcodes are not new and some patents will probably become public domain
in a few years. But nothing should stop us from searching better
alternatives,
who knows ?

For me, development freedom a higher stake than profit.
Though, being unemployed, i still have to find a way to earn money.

i am not an expert but have gained some knowledge with other
copylefted projects (F-CPU to name one). So yes, i am careful
but i now i know that publishing the codes and ideas in magazines
is a good protection. It also lets specialists examine the idea
and determine the potential patent threat. Finally, publication
is a good and tax-free way to earn money.

I am currently writing an article on my entropy coder
for DDJ. This should increase the peer review,
generate comments and find practical applications.

I have subscribed to this list in order to know
how to implement Vorbis codecs and determine wheter
my own entropy coder could be used in Vorbis or
other xiph projects. If we can make better and simpler
codecs, this will reduce the need to pay MPEG fees :-)
