Yep, it works fine on OS X now, at least with fink; I haven't tried 
with the stock automake, but that's not so important.

A suggestion: it's more conventional to strip the path prefix from the 
input files in generating output filenames, so that the output ends up 
in the current working directory instead of wherever the input file 
happened to be.
