Seems during the night was the correct option :) I removed the
autoproject-supplied system.h and xmalloc.c, and made my own x*alloc
functions and put them in common.*. The attached tarball holds the
modified files, just replace the old ones with these (I would have made
a cvs diff, but since there are new files, that won't work).

I don't know if this will the tool build on OS X, but at least there's
less code/macros that can go wrong now.

Someone with cvs write access, add this to cvs. And remove system.h and
xmalloc.c.
