I would very much encourage you to use the Simple Direct Media Layer API,
see: http://www.libsdl.org/ which is available under both Windows and
Linux and does what DirectX does, just simpler. It is provided under the
GNU LGPL license.

Using this will also increase the portability of your
program(s) considerably.
