Well, you don't NEED the sources to the drivers.  

Several people have come up with what's called a "wavetap" which is a device 
driver that snaps in between the sound card driver (which there's API specs 
for hooking into those- the DDK) and the actual DDK hooks in Windows.  

There's the same sort of thing under most OSes- Linux included.
