IIRC, /dev/dsp is low-level, direct-to-hardware access, while /dev/audio
goes through kernel-level buffering and mixing, and is thus (I _think_) a
multiple-open device.  Of course, I've never used either one much on x86
hardware (Mac geek), so I could be remembering wrong, or my experiences
could be different from what you'd see.
