FreeBSD's audio device is made (intended) to be compatible with
OSS (and it works here.)

NetBSD and OpenBSD has libossaudio to keep compatibility. libao's
configure script does know this library.

BSD/OS has good old voxware. I don't know anything further.

minimal patches to make ac3dec working on NetBSD is found at:
http://cvsweb.netbsd.org/bsdweb.cgi/pkgsrc/audio/ac3dec/patches/

I think patches from Stan is good enough for NetBSD.
