[vorbis-dev] State of Vorbis, 20000409

Hello folks,

An incredible amount of work got done in the past week and a half. And I
missed the arbitrary, meaningless launch deadline. Not much new there...

In the past week, developers contributed plugins for Winamp (thanks Jack and
Michael), and kmpg (thanks Martin). Sonique added Vorbis support (thanks
Andrew), although that won't appear in the 1.5 version just released; expect to
see it in the next release. The XMMS plugin is complete pending the fix of one
outstanding (and highly annoying bug) tripped by SMP machines.

Thanks to Michael Smith for doing the digging that found the encoding bug under
Win/MSVC; it was due to simple braindamage on my part. I also killed a few
bugs in Vorbisfile.

The new psychoacoustics and final merge with the mainline aren't finished, but
I'm getting there. That's incomplete due mostly to finite CPU resources to
train codebooks and the occasional bug in the [non-production code] trainer/
encode tree splitter. Integration is complete when the new codebooks are, and
I've been a day away from that for a few days ;-)

See the CVS logs for more detail.

Work remaining for the Big Launch:

Command line tool (Everyone loves a slick GUI and no one ever wants to work on
the command line stuff ;-). There's more work here than is obvious due to it
including encode as well as decode. This is partially mine.

Documentation. Practically all of it. Now that several folks have use at
least the Vorbisfile API, more people are qualified to work on this even if not
to own it. If you want to work on this but have questions, you own my
attention.

Minor lib cleanup and testing of 'unusual stuff'; things like returning error
details instead of only an error status, supporting truncated packets, etc.
These details fall into the 'brainless busywork' category, but gotta be done.
Once the merge is done, this stuff is probably mine.

Monty
