IIRC the camera cpu had trouble keeping up with the CRC overhead for
Ogg as well as network packet generation, and using non-standard tools
(rtp instead of Ogg encapsulation) made it difficult to interface
with. I believe the newer models have enough cpu bandwidth to handle
things.

The cameras used a hardware encoder running on an fpga. It's a
separate implementation from the libtheora encoder.
