Well, Diego has corrected me in that 'these views are not
representative of the whole mplayer project'.   Despite its flaws,
especially if you're a technical user willing to get his CLI on,
mplayer + ffmpeg2theora will be the most capable solution.  As much
trouble as I've had with a couple of the mplayer folks, and despite
all its bugs, it's still the video-equivalent-of-sox I use most often.

j^ also reports constructive collaboration with ffmpeg, so that's heartening.
