[Theora] trying to encode from dvd using mplayer

have you seen mplayer's ogg demuxer?  last time i had a look at it, it
seemed to badly require a complete rewrite.  unfortunately it supports
not only ogg/theora but also a whole bunch of ugly .ogm incarnations,
which should keep any sane person from attempting to do so :)

of course, a plain ogg/theora demuxer should be simple to fix.  maybe
give mplayer a separate theora demuxer?  but then all those non-standard
ogg/theora files that have some ascii subtitles muxed into them would
not play any more.
