I have aclocal in /usr/local/bin. It has the same date and time
as /usr/local/bin/automake-1.9 which I built and installed nine days ago.

When I remove aclocal from /usr/local/bin, this is what happens;
 [john at kjohn theora]$ ./autogen.sh
 checking for autoconf...
 checking for automake 1.6 or later... automake
 checking for aclocal 1.6 or later... no
 You must have automake installed to compile theora.
 Download the appropriate package for your distribution,
 or get the source tarball at ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/

I don't know how to rebuild it to look in the system paths.

Maybe I should wait for the beta1 release of theora, and build it from the
tarballs. That worked with the alpha3 release. I'm not really helping with
the development; just wanted to see how theora-from-svn compressed video
compares with theora-alpha3 compressed video.
Regards,
John
