You don't mention doing any resampling; full dv resolution theora
likely won't play back in realtime on that machine. You might try
subsampling first, e.g. to 320x240. Also, make sure mplayer isn't
dropping any frames.
Jan's ffmpeg2theora tool has switches to do this as part of a single
step; it's easier to use than the pipes with mplayer. You might give

Yes. You might try the theora-mmx branch in svn; it's part of the way
