Regardless of how you mix the signals, the problem is that Speex (and
most/all other speech codecs) doesn't do a good job at compressing two
simultaneous voices. Speex uses a model of voice production to better
encode the signal, but a mix of two voices isn't well described by that
model. You need to increase the bit-rate in order to compensate for
that.
