[paranoia] cdparanoia producing silent files.

(this is not solely a cdparanoia problem - I get the same result using
cdda2wav. This mailing list seems like a good place to get advice
though.)
I have a problem using cdparanoia. It produces entirely silent files.
Specifically, the file is full of zeroes. A typical file looks something
like:
00000000 52 49 46 46 E4 BB 8A 02 57 41 56 45 66 6D 74 20 10 00 00 00 01 00 02 00 RIFF....WAVEfmt ........
00000018 44 AC 00 00 10 B1 02 00 04 00 10 00 64 61 74 61 C0 BB 8A 02 00 00 00 00 D...........data........
00000030 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........................
00000048 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........................
00000060 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........................
00000078 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........................
... etc.
It seems to have no problems reading the TOC; and the files produced are
all of the right size; but they are filled with zeroes.
This happens regardless of whether I access the drive through ide-scsi
or ide-cd; as mentioned before it also happens when using cdd2wav.
For what it's worth, this is using Debian-packaged cdparanoia, version
3a9.8-10. Kernel is 2.6.2.
The CD drive itself has no problems playing audio CDs through zinf; and it
will mount iso9660 CDs quite happily.
I can't find this particular problem described anywhere in the archives
or FAQ. Any theories?
