It's not exactly "raw", as there are ECC (Error Correction Code) data and 
subchannels that go with the audio, but it's more "raw" than non-audio data 
(which has extra error correction codes and headers).

It's not stored on the CD. Xmms computes a CDDB ID (using the number of 
tracks, their length and some other information) that is supposed to identify 
the CD. It then queries a CDDB database on the internet to get the 
band/album/track information.
