[paranoia] cd ripping slows, pauses near end of track

Greetings,

I'm attempting to rip wav files from audio cd's on my cdrom drive. It
seems to work ok for the most part, except that when cdparanoia gets to
the end of a track, it slows down and them hangs. If I ctrl-c to exit
the program, I find a complete .wav file, which sounds fine and which
seems to contain the whole track. This behavior prevents programs like
grip and ripperX from functioning properly, since it waits for
confirmation from cdparanoia that track ripping is finished. I don't
know what sort of information you need, but here is some general info on
one cd I tried:

[peter at prw peter]$ cdparanoia -Qv
cdparanoia III release 9.7 (December 13, 1999)
(C) 1999 Monty <monty at xiph.org> and Xiphophorus

Here is a ripping session of one track:
[peter at prw peter]$ cdparanoia 1
cdparanoia III release 9.7 (December 13, 1999)
(C) 1999 Monty <monty at xiph.org> and Xiphophorus

Report bugs to paranoia at xiph.org
http://www.xiph.org/paranoia/

Ripping from sector      32 (track  1 [0:00.00])
          to sector    2066 (track  1 [0:27.09])

outputting to cdda.wav

 (== PROGRESS == [                             >| 001888 00 ] == :-) o
==)

Around this point the ripping slows down to almost nothing, and the
track is effectively finished, but cdparanoia does not seem to
understand this.

I am assuming that this is a problem with my drive. I have used
cdparanoia with no problems at home on my Power Mac with a SCSI cdrom.

My work computer is a Dell Dimension 4100 with the above-mentioned
Lite-On ATAPI cdrom. I'm using RedHat 7.1 and kernel 2.4.5.
