[paranoia] Another newbie question ...

The problem is the age of this version.  2.2 kernels went with an ATAPI ioctl 
interface change (actually, they made a change that was previously optional 
into a mandatory behavior).

9.6 and later (eg, the 9.7 on the site and the CVS version) will work 
correctly on 2.2+ kernels.
