[paranoia] Sporadic Hangs using Cdparanoia

May I ask what drive?  Many drives time out when they get into trouble reading
bad media.  If the drive hangs forever trying to read, it could easily take out
the SCSI subsystem (if the driver is easily confused).

It's easy to tell; can you hear the drive seeking like mad?  If not, that ain't
it.

It is also the case that SCSI is touchy about hardware screwups.  Or rather,
that it's so robust most of the time that there are alot of badly broken SCSI
chains out there that work.... almost all the time.  I'd check your chain
*very* carefully.

Ah, that sounds like an unhappy chain.  

Keep the cables short. Terminate both ends of the chain; if the controller is 
on one end, it must have termination enabled.  If this is a wide SCSI chain, 
you have to terminate *all 16* data lines, not just the 8 that go to the 
CDROMs.  Do not put any termination in the middle of a chain.
