[paranoia] Speed problem?

    I'm using RH 6.2, a 20x4x4 Ricoh CR-RW.

  I've just downloaded the latest version and compiled it.  When I run
it, the cd sounds like it's going to self-destruct.  All kinds of very
loud sounds come from the thing.  This does not happen when I'm using
xmms to simply play the cd.  Is it possible it's just trying to spin too
fast?

    Any help appreciated.
