I can read from an iso9660 cd so I believe that I have ide-scsi emulation
correctly installed.
Here is the output from -vQ
cdparanoia III release 9.6 (August 17, 1999)

Checking /dev/cdrom for cdrom...
Testing /dev/cdrom for cooked ioctl() interface
/dev/scd0 is not a cooked ioctl CDROM.
Testing /dev/cdrom for SCSI interface
generic device: /dev/sga
ioctl device: /dev/scd0
CDROM sensed: GoldStar CD-ROM GCD-R542B 1.20
Checking for SCSI emulation and transport revision...
No SG_EMULATED_HOST ioctl(); Checking inquiry command...
Inquiry bytes: 0x05 0x80 0x02 0x01
Drive is reporting itself as SCSI-1-CCS, but is
probably just a buggy/broken ATAPI drive. Assuming
ATAPI.
Checking for MMC style command set...
Drive is MMC, but reports CDDA incapable.
It will likely not be able to read audio data.
Verifying CDDA command set...
Expected command set FAILED!
Performing full probe for CDDA command set...

Unable to find any suitable command set from probe;
drive probably not CDDA capable.
006: Could not read any data from drive
Cdparanoia could not find a way to read audio from this drive.
